Didn't Ask

A student duo Game Jam project made by Calve Cowdry & Ben Farrell at Falmouth University, Falmouth, Cornwall, UK.

The Development Story

Didn't Ask was a student game jam project made over a weekend by myself and Ben Farrell. This was my first time participating in a game jam and was hosted by Falmouth University. The title of the game jam was "Mind the Gap" and the theme of the jam was "consequences". All submissions had to run on a gaming cabinet.

The intention of the Jam was a fun short jam bridging the gap between submission and Expo. In order to:

  • Have fun getting to know next year’s teammates.

  • Have one last slice of creative mayhem.

  • Just strike out and do something different.

As developers we were wondering what the "consequences" would be if we didn't follow the rules of the diversifiers, while also following the rule of the theme.

At the beginning we decided to go with three simple "elements" maps. Grass, Fire and Water. However, after blocking these out in greybox form, we realised that the scope was too high for a weekend project and maybe impossible to run on a gaming cabinet. In turn, we decided to go with a bull-ring type arena and a high health boss in the middle. We also mapped a simple button system to the character to be able to dodge and shoot their way to victory.

The Work

Level Designer

  • Experimental concepting focusing on use of arcade cabinets.

  • Created various level blockouts.

  • Rapid iteration on prototyping levels and playtesting.

  • Programmed using Unreal's Blueprinting System.
